Howletts Zoo

We took a trip to Howlett’s Zoo in Kent and I must confess to not coming away with much in the way of good photographs.  I decided to travel with just one lens (my 17-200 Sigma superzoom) and it didn’t really have enough magnification for the animals, which tended to be too far away and the minimum aperture of 5.6 at full zoom meant I couldn’t blur out the cage mesh.  As I was aiming for animal portraits the only decent one I got is the one of the rhino below. A conversion to black and white seems like the best treatment for this image.

So rather than post a number of decent but not great photographs I am going to be selective and post just this one.

However, you do get a years passport to visit as many times as you want as your admission so there are plenty of opportunities to return and try and get something better.

This blog is not really intended to be a portfolio of my photographic work (although it may develop into that) but rather a sequential series of posts of specific photographs, comments on photography and things I feel worth sharing. With that said a few words about me. Always been taking photographs for as long as I can remember. There was a black and white Polaroid camera as a child, then a little 110, followed by an Agfa basic camera. Progressed onto Olympus, dabbled with a Fuji APS and then finally progressed onto digital. Starting with a 1.5MP, then 5MP and then an 8MP Canon Ixus. This camera hooked me into Canon and since had a 350D digital SLR and now a 50D. Can't justify anything more as this would mean stepping upto full frame, though maybe one day.... Currently trying to develop more style and concensus with my work, taking more time on images and being more thoughtful. Of course there will always be snapshots!
